Open Question: What cell phone plan should I get?
I’m asking my parents for a phone for christmas, and I’m trying to find a very well priced plan to convince them.

Here are the phones I’m thinking about (don’t suggest different ones to me I’ve already made up my mind!)

US cellular: LG Banter
Verizon/Alltel: LG Banter, LG Env3
AT&T: Nokia Surge, Samsung Propel, Pantech Matrix,
T mobile: Samsung Gravity, Samsung Gravity 2, Sidekick

I will use web browsing a lot (only when I am away from home though). I will also be instant messaging through AIM a lot (only when I am away from home). I don’t IM that much, but now that I will have the ability to IM on my phone, I probably will do it more.

I will definitely use my phone more on the weekends when i have more free time, and will hardly ever use it at night (I’m at home so I can use the computer or home phone).

I wouldn’t call anyone just to talk (I’d IM them instead). I would only call and receive calls when I’m in an emergency or when I need to get something done. I definitely won’t be calling long distance. I don’t want a family plan (I’m an only child, my mom’s plan is through her work, and my dad doesn’t have a cellphone.

When you contacted the Talks-A-Lot Company, they were offering a monthly plan of $40 for 500 minutes and $0.25 for each minute over the 500 minutes. In the Sunday paper you see an ad for the ChatAway Company, which offers a monthly plan of $35 for 500 minutes and $0.30 for each minute over the 500 minutes. How many minutes would you have to talk over the 500 minutes for the cost to be the same with both companies? What would be the equal cost?

1. Set up a linear system consisting of two equations. Assume you will talk for a minimum of 500 minutes. The first equation would be for Talks-A-Lot. The total cost, y, equals the base fee plus cost per minute times the number of minutes over 500. The second equation would be set up just like the first, only you need to use the information for the ChatAway Company.

2. Solve the linear system using the substitution method.

3. Answer the questions.

A. How many minutes would you have to talk over the 500 minutes for the cost to be the same with both companies?

B. What would be the cost when the minutes are the same?

4. If you plan to talk for 700 minutes, which company should you hire?
